Doctor Burney had a busy household. His wife had died several years ago, but the rambling old village house hummed with the activities of 3 daughters.

Young Suzy was still at school; Carola was the glamour girl of the family with ambitions to become a model.

And third, Rachel the oldest, had put aside a successful career as an illustrator in London to take on the job of housekeeping under the watchful eyes of Aunt Flo. She did though, find time for some freelance art work, illustrating children's books.

As might be expected, Rachel's life was quiet, but pleasant enough - until the arrival of the new squire Daniel Elliot, to whom she took an instant dislike. Daniel though, was not a man to be ignored, as Rachel found, when he showed signs of becoming a disturbing influence on all the Doctor's family !

Believing he's interested in her glamourous sister Carola, Rachel is very slow on the uptake in realising it's actually her own self he's pursuing....!

Work Description

Although she kept house for her father and sisters in a country village, Rachel Burney was far from being the ‘one who stayed at home’. Her doctor father was kind and appreciative, Rachel was on the best of terms with her sisters - although it was the younger, Carola, who was the glamour girl of the family - and life was always full and pleasant, and with marriage to her old friend Edward somewhere in the future. But everything changed with the arrival at the Hall of the new 'squire’, Daniel Elliot, to whom Rachel took an immediate and inexplicable dislike. However, liked or disliked, Daniel was not a man anyone could ignore, as Rachel soon found when he showed signs of becoming a disturbing influence on all their lives.
