Un mundo futuro en el que se ha conseguido la igualdad total. En la Ceremonia anual de cada mes de diciembre se celebra el paso de todos los niños a un nivel superior. Los Onces pasan a Doces y reciben sus asignaciones vitalicias: después de dar a cada uno las «gracias por su infancia», el Comité de Ancianos asigna, de acuerdo con las capacidades y gustos, la misión más apropiada para cada chico. Jonás recibe, sin embargo, una misión no común: ser el próximo Receptor de Memoria de la Comunidad. Con este fin, inicia un aprendizaje doloroso y distinto, en el que le indican que si la libertad asusta, «es verdad que hay que proteger a la gente de la posibilidad de escoger mal»...
