520 $aIn 1775, while traveling with her family from Virginia to Kentucky, and joined by another family along the way, eleven-year-old Elizabeth reads Gulliver's Travels to the children and keeps a journal of their adventures, which include a runaway slave, encounters with Cherokees, and a near-fatal accident. On the eve of the Revolutionary War, 11-year-old Elizabeth Poage and her family embark on a dangerous and exciting trip westward to Daniel Boone's new Kentucky settlement. Elizabeth is unnerved by her younger sister, Martha, on the way. But when Martha suddenly disappears into the wilderness, Elizabeth races to find her. West to Caintuck! Everyone warns of Indian ambushes as Elizabeth Poage and her mother, father, and four brothers and sisters begin the dangerous trip westward to Daniel Boone's new settlement in Kentucky. But the only thing bothering eleven-year-old Elizabeth is her younger sister, Martha, Pa's favorite. Things start looking up when another family with girls Elizabeth's age joins the caravan. Elizabeth, the only one who can read and write, entrances all by reading aloud from her copy of Gulliver's Travels. All the children, even Martha, crowd around to listen to the fantastic tale. Inspired, Elizabeth records the events of her own journey: the harsh climb over mountains, across rivers, and through hostile Indian territory. Elizabeth believes she's ready for anything, until Martha disappears. Then, without thinking, she races into the savage wilderness to find the sister she tried not to love.
