Gene Simmons was Chief Scientist of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston (Texas) for two years, then Professor of Geophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked on the scientific aspects of the Apollo Program between 1965-1970(?). He also was Principal Investigator of an Apollo 17 experiment to measure the surface electrical properties of the Moon.
